SpicyRPN Release 2.0.0 licensing

SpicyRPN's original application source, tests, build and publishing scripts, project configuration, assets, and documentation (including the user manual) are licensed under the MIT License.

What this covers
This grant applies to original SpicyRPN material in this source distribution. Third-party material retains its own licenses, copyright notices, public-domain dedications, and other terms. Preserve applicable notices in individual files, including the material under ThirdParty/ and SpicyRPN/Third Party/.
The editable LaTeX files and source figures under SpicyRPN Manual/ are the preferred source form of the manual. Original manual material, in source and compiled forms, is covered by MIT. The manual's copyright notice is Copyright © 2026 Bryan R. Davies.
The app's HELP → Licenses & Acknowledgments sheet and Appendix E of the manual contain the complete MIT, GPLv3, and LGPLv3 texts. GPLv3 is included because LGPLv3 incorporates it and some upstream source tools/tests use it; the original SpicyRPN application and manual use MIT. The copies in the app, manual, and source package are checked for consistency during packaging.
Third-party components
SpicyRPN links GMP, MPFR, and MPC under LGPL-3.0-or-later. For GMP, this uses its LGPL option while preserving all upstream license options.
| Component | Upstream terms and notices |
|---|---|
| GMP 6.3.0 library | LGPL-3.0-or-later or GPL-2.0-or-later, at the recipient's choice. See COPYING.LESSERv3, COPYINGv2, and COPYINGv3 inside ThirdParty/gmp-6.3.0.tar.xz. |
| GMP demonstration programs and tests | GPL-3.0-or-later; preserve their individual notices. These are source/build tools, not application code. |
| MPFR 4.2.2 library | LGPL-3.0-or-later. See COPYING.LESSER and COPYING (GPLv3) inside ThirdParty/mpfr-4.2.2.tar.xz. |
| MPC 1.4.1 library | LGPL-3.0-or-later. Preserve the license files and notices in ThirdParty/mpc-1.4.1.tar.xz. See GNU MPC. |
| SQLite | Public domain; see the dedication in the bundled SpicyRPN/Third Party/sqlite3.c and headers. |
| Upstream documentation and support files | Retain their individual licenses, including GNU Free Documentation License notices where specified in the GNU library manuals. These files are not relicensed under MIT. |
Library modification and rebuilding
SpicyRPN statically links the three GNU math libraries. Its release source package supplies the library sources and the application source, resources, configuration, and scripts needed to rebuild with modified libraries, using the source-and-relinking option in LGPLv3 section 4(d)(0).
You may modify the library portions and reverse engineer the application for debugging those modifications, as permitted by LGPLv3. SpicyRPN's application terms do not restrict those permissions. The libraries retain their LGPL rights, including modification and redistribution under their applicable terms.
Follow Rebuilding with modified libraries to apply patches to the verified library sources, rebuild the libraries, and clean/relink the application. The instructions cover both Mac architectures, iOS device builds, and personal signing. Xcode and Apple's SDKs are supplied separately; use your own signing identity for personal device builds.
Release distribution and source
The US$1.99 App Store price pays for the integrated, easy-to-install iOS distribution. The original material's MIT grant and the libraries' respective license terms apply to this distribution.
The matching source is available at https://spicyrpn.com/ as SpicyRPN-2.0.0-source.zip, alongside SpicyRPN-2.0.0-Manual.pdf and their checksums. The ZIP includes the application, manual sources and figures, project configuration, tests, build scripts, and complete version-pinned GMP, MPFR, and MPC source archives with their notices. It supports universal macOS (arm64 and x86_64) and arm64 iOS builds.
The release package includes verified dependency archives, including ThirdParty/mpc-1.4.1.tar.xz, for offline dependency builds. See build instructions and archive validation.
For binary distribution using this LGPL compliance route, provide the matching source/rebuild package at no additional charge, with clear directions beside the binary download. Retain each published package for as long as required to serve its associated binary distribution. Include the library notices and complete GPLv3 and LGPLv3 texts, preserve the library modification/debugging permissions above, and supply installation information where LGPLv3 section 4(e) requires it. Original MIT material retains its copyright and permission notice; upstream source and documentation retain their own notices.
For App Store distribution, Apple's standard EULA contains an exception for modification and reverse engineering permitted by open-source component licenses. Preserve that exception and these component permissions in any custom application terms. RELEASING.md provides the source notice for the store listing and the release validation procedure.
